Incredible Run of Form Culminates in Target Fish for Spence

Spencer Wright’s incredible roll continued at the weekend and a ‘last gasp’ take just before he finished packing up resulted in his target fish, the elusive Big Scale common. Here’s Spence’s account, simply superb angling mate!

“Amazingly, the run continues. I fished Friday night and some of Saturday. Fish were evident overnight but no takes materialized, which left me scratching my head. I was conscious of another member fishing the swim before me and the birds had been hammering where he had baited and was worried how much he’d put out. They were ignoring my spots, so considering the amount id put over them this week, proved in my head that they were probably clear and had eaten the lot!

Anyway, with everything packed down, apart from the rods lain on the deck and due to be collected within 20 minutes, I heard a screaming clutch. I quickly shipped the net together and proceeded to be dragged around the lake by an unseen animal. It was scary and ferocious and came out of the water 3 times in the fight but I still didn’t know what it was as the sun was glaring off the surface…

Then, 20 minutes later, like a big old submarine, my nemesis and target of 4 years and uncaught for 3 years, the Big Scale common slid onto the surface and into the net. 41lb 6oz, get in there!!!!!!

So, in 3 overnighters, 4 x 40’s and 2 of which were commons in 2 of those, I’m ‘still’ in shock!

Normal tactics applied (Reverse Combi Anchor rig). Got a lovely shot of the hook hold, it was nailed!”

Spence will be traveling ‘up country’ soon to do a video for the ESP website showing his deadly effective Reverse Combi Anchor Rig and how he fishes it.
