Hewitt’s Heavyweight Summer

Prolific angler Kev Hewitt has been busy recently on a variety of venues. Here Kev updates us on what he’s been up to and as usual there’s plenty of carp involved! Kev has been putting the new Syncro XT mono through its paces with excellent results…

August couldn’t really have gone any better for me. I fished a charity event for MND on Linear Fisheries Brasenose one lake where I got paired with a nice chap. One of the first things he said is how he would like to catch a 30+ carp and I assured him that was not going to happen as I believed B1 only contained 5 or 6 thirties in amongst 2,000 fish; needle in haystack springs to mind. We caught some nice carp over the first two days but none over 20Lb. On the final morning we had a take just after first light and it wasn’t until I slid the net under the fish that I realized just how big it was, all 31Lb 2oz of her! Ok so we didn’t manage a 20 like I had hoped but the 31 was the biggest fish of the event and we both left with a smile.

The following weekend I headed to Linch Hill’s Christchurch and managed to slip the net under the magnificent crinkle tailed common at 38lb 12oz within 4 hours of setting up. She was a stunner and was fooled by an ESP bulk pva bag of mixed pellets with a northern special hookbait on a trusty size 8 ESP Curve-Shanx hook and a 15lb Drennan Microbraid hook link. The same tactic accounted for another couple of twenties that day and during the night I had a stunning 33Lb chestnut mirror off a baited area at 60 yards. The rig was the same but this time fished with a mini plain ESP pva bag which was easier to reach the distance than the bigger pva bag which is more suited to close range fishing.
I couldn’t get back down the following week as I had a trip to France to fish the world carp classic on Lac De Madine. Although I suffered a blank, I had a fantastic time in great company.

Once back from France I managed to squeeze another session in on Christchurch. This time a heavily spodded area at 70 yards got the fish on the feed in low pressure, wet and windy conditions and I ended the session with six fish with the biggest topping 40lb 5oz. I had been using the new ESP Syncro XT line in 15Lb during my last couple of sessions and this session in particular it was really put through its paces. The swim was very weedy and I required the boat to help me land three of the fish including the 40 which buried me in the thickest of weed bed’s. It was the first time I really put the line to test and it passed with flying colours.

Its now time to prepare for the UK carp cup final on Brasesnose one. Lets hope my recent run of good like continues. Watch this space……

Tight lines,
