Savay Brace for Stu

Stuart Court had a right result on Savay last week, catching two of the lakes residents in the space of a few hours, a rare feat on this seriously tricky venue.

After only fishing 2 nights on Savay so far this season due to an illness, a holiday and the extreme hot weather we’ve been having, last week saw my first proper effort on the historic venue rewarded with 2 lovely old mirrors.

I arrived at the lake early on Sunday morning to try and spot some fish and as luck would have it a couple of shows gave me a good idea of where I needed to be. The fish were in an area that I knew quite well from fishing it last season so with minimum disturbance I was able to present rigs onto spots which I knew fish would be happy to feed on.

Savay being Savay, I had fish showing regularly in front of me but no takes were forthcoming for a couple of days. Then out of the blue at 10.30pm my right hand rod fished to a bar at 90 yards flew off resulting in a gorgeous old mirror. Catching any carp from Savay is a true honour and not a regular accurate so I was extremely pleased to get my first fish of the season under my belt.

A few hours later, to my utter surprise, my left hand rod was now signalling a take. At first it was one of those bleary eyed moments in the early hours when your brain isn’t quite engaged properly and you’re not too sure what’s going on, is it a liner? a bird pick up? then you realise it is actually a fish, your senses quickly come back to you and you switch into fish playing mode. A fairly uneventful fight played out quickly and the fish rolled into the net amongst a large ball of weed, it was my second mirror of the night.

The first fish was caught from the back of a bar very close to a weedbed using an ESP Ejector Lead Clip, a 7 inch length of 25lb Two Tone and a size 7 Raptor Curve Shanx hook fished as a snowman with a Baitcraft Super K bottom bait topped off with a small white snowball pop up. The spot was regularly topped up with Super K boillies each day as I knew there were still fish in the area and they had no doubt been getting away with eating it.

The second fish was caught on a completely different set up due to the area it was being fished in. I found a silty area just off the marginal shelf of an island which seemed perfect for the chod rig so after giving the area a good scattering of Super K I attached a matching pop up to my ready-tied ESP Short Chod rig. I don’t do much chod fishing at all so rather than tie the rigs up myself I always keep a packet in my bag for exactly this kind of occasion. The hooks are always super sharp and the rigs are tied just as neatly as I could ever tie them so they are really handy for me. This time I chose a size 6 hook tied to 20lb Bristle Filament which matches perfectly with a 15mm pop up.

I’m already looking forward to my next session.
