David Meek had a lovely result at the weekend, following on from his prolific stint just before Christmas, Dave returned to the same Hampshire stillwater at the weekend and had three more! Here’s what happened, and for those that don’t know, Dave has gone all Izaak Walton (very old skool) on us by referring to maggots as ‘gentles’.
‘I arrived at the lake Thursday morning. After having a lean spell at work, rather than sitting around getting cabin fever I thought I would make the most of the quiet time and go fishing.
I had a look about and decided to fish a swim I had 4 bites from on a previous trip. After a few flicks with a lead it was clear that the spot had got a lot harder, and bigger. So three ESP Soft Ghost hook links with size 4 Stiff Riggers where fanned on the spot. After spreading some CC Moore XXX chops, ground bait and some ‘gentles’ around the area, I settled down and awaited a response.
Shortly after 12.30, in the pitch black my middle rod was away and after a spirited battle a sparsely scaled 23.8 mirror was sulking in the net. I set up the camera, and by using a wireless app from my phone I was able to tae some nice self takes. With the fish waddling away the rod was reclipped, hook touched up and slung out into the darkness.
Three in the morning and the same rod was away. Another spirited battle and soon a beautiful 28.4 mirror was sulking in the net. After sacking him up I recast the rod. And littered 7 large spombs of ‘gentles’.
In the morning my friend came down to photograph the mirror. And after a couple of warm drinks the same rod was away. This one felt like I hooked the bottom, and eventually weeded me up. With patient pressure. The page mirror was soon in the net. At 25.10 his weight belied his power.
Who said Winter was bleak?’
