Believe it or not a lot of my carp fishing is conducted with only one rod and by that I don’t mean stalking, but overnight sessions when most anglers reach for three rods immediately.
In my experience more lines in the water does not mean more fish and two recent 36 hour sessions once again proved that to me when with only a single rod in a bid to keep disturbance to a minimum I landed 40 carp over 20lbs with the vast majority over 25lbs.
Terminal tackle was simple but highly effective, utilising, in my opinion, the best hooks and hooklength on the market – Tungsten Loaded and Cryogen Grippers. The rig rarely tangles but when using only one it’s vital everything is 100% so I use dissolvable foam to achieve this. I don’t however squeeze it directly around the hook because residue can remain for a long time, instead I pop a nugget inside ESP PVA mesh and nick his onto the hook ; no residue and a guaranteed constant rate of breakdown.
So don’t always reach for 3 rods – less means more sometimes!
