Short session cracker for fireman Dan

Affable Dan Kilgour has been in touch with news of some exciting big pit shananigans. Dan knows his stuff when it comes to targetting large, low stock venues and catches his share even on short trips.

The Pretty One

‘My long term water that I have been fishing for 6 or 7 years was sadly taken away from me this year as a new angling club have taken over the fishing rights on it, leaving me with a challenge to find some venues that fit in with what I am looking for.

I started fishing on this new pit late june and have managed to create a few chances on my short morning sessions and overnighters….I had fished a day session in the area on the monday when a big storm hit and I saw a couple of fish poke their heads out in the area at first light, I was quick to put 2 single pop ups out there and a small scattering of bait ‘chod and spread’ style.

Later in the morning i managed to bag a corking mirror, and hung on till about 5pm before reeling in, convinced there was fish in the area. Before I left I used the throwing stick to put a kilo of boilies out in the area as I knew I could get down in the morning the next day before work and the wind would be blowing the same way.

25.08 mirror

I got my pop ups and rigs done at home that night and an early rise of 4am saw me at the lakeside for 5am rods armed and ready. I put one rod out to where I had baited and caught the fish the day previously, but held the second back in case one showed. Twenty minutess later one did just that, 30 yards away from the area so out went a single and 10 baits around it!

Forty five minutess later the rod off the baited mark charged off and was lucky enough to bag a fish called ‘the pretty one’ , the second biggest fish in the lake and one that does go over 40lb! I phoned my mate who lives 10 mins away, and he was in the car quick smart. He turned up and as I showed him the fish in the net , I had a couple of bleeps on the remaining neville, and turned round to see the tip wrapping round on the other rod! Another nice mirror rolled in the net not long after so I ended up with 2 bites in an hour and 20 mins fishing!lucky I always carry 2 nets! The pretty one was really spawned out at 33lb and the second fish was 25.08. I packed up and went to work at 8am a happy man! Both fish caught on ESP stiff rigger hooks, to 20lb stiff bristle filament, and esp leadcore and end tackle- chod style and bait was Obsession Baits Nut mix. ”
