Mark McKenna has been getting amongst the fish again on a recent stint on Savay. Efficient location and bait application are the keys to success on this tricky venue and mark has been using both to good effect.
‘I got down to Savay on Sunday at first light having been frequenting the lake regularly during the previous Toad rota. I had a good idea of where I needed to be in fact my mate Jordan had tagged one in the reeds the previous evening and whilst we sat there looking on Sunday morning it was evident that they were still there in numbers. Jordan had work on Monday so I did the ‘honorable’ move straight in behind him! I realized I had picked the wrong bait up from the freezer on the way down so rather than bother going back to the unit I thought I’d fish with whatever I had brought with me – which turned out to be the Super K! I whacked out a fair old bed of bait including hemp, corn, prototype pellet, prototype additives and a load of crushed Super K to a massive feature about 120yards out. I was off to a relatively quick start by very early Tuesday morning with an old 26lb mirror but the best was yet to come, a load more bait, more extra mild air and accompanying low pressure delivered a brace of thirties including a mirror of 36lb and a common of 33lb 12oz Thursday evening and Saturday morning respectively completing a cracking week in Autumn for me on Savay’.
Line was the trusty ESP Syncro XT in 0.40mm, tubing was ESP 12 Bore, semi fixed 4.5oz lead on an ESP adjustable lead clip, 25lb Two Tone coated hook link, size 8 ESP Long Shanx hooks, terminal arrangement was a snow man type set up using a 10mm Super K hardened hook bait with a sliver of juicy fruit Xlite pop up to achieve negative buoyancy.
