Sean Leverett continued his consistent run on Stoneacres last week with a couple more jewels. Here’s the lowdown:
With the MNDA charity event due to start on the Monday morning I had the opportunity to sneak a couple of nights in on Stoney and so headed to the lake late afternoon.
On arriving there were a few on. I ended up in a swim that I hadn’t fished before and on having a look about in the boat it soon became evident that the viz was poor to say the least!
I would normally try to find silty areas but with me unable to see a great deal I had to settle with finding as small a gravel spot as possible as I could see the feint glow of this through the murky glare. After eventually finding 2 spots I was happy with I lowered a snowman rig on each one and baited them with about a kilo of the krill. I also marked the backs of the areas with mini markers so I was able to find them again should I need to.
The night passed quietly but at first light one of the rods was away and after a short fight out in the boat landed a cracking looking Mirror of 29lb 14oz. After the pictures I re-baited the spot and got the rod back out.
The day was quiet as was the night but once again the following morning the same rod burst into life and this time after yet another decent boat ordeal I netted a low 30 common. This one weighed in at 31lb 3oz.
Nothing more happened but I did see a really good fish show on me a few times but on reeling in I found the lead to be missing and the rig spun up! Sneaky fish these.
Rigs were blow back rigs constructed using the new prototype ESP Tungsten hook link material in conjunction with a size 6 Raptor Big T and some shrink tube to create a kicker. These were then fished with snowman hookbaits (16mm Krill bottom bait with a 12mm White chocolate topper). ESP Ejector lead clips and leadcore were the rest of the set up.
