Kris Garrett braved the wintry conditions recently and was repaid in fine style with this lovely looking common. Again proving that if you can get a bait in the right place they are very catchable even in terrible conditions. Good angling Kris!
Over the last month I have been doing my fair share of fishing squeezing in overnighters where possible when the lakes haven’t been frozen solid, and evening sessions in the worst weather to catch my quarry with cold north easterly’s and snow flurries battering my brolly.
5am the alarm beeped once and I was up and on my way arriving at the venue at 5:45. Setting up in the cold darkly gloom I knew something wasn’t right but I couldn’t put my finger on it. Come first light it revelled the lake was solid! Fail!
Back on the road I went to a further 3 lakes finding a lid on all of them, but the 4th lake was only 80% frozen. This was my last choice due to it having been fishing so hard of late. After 4 hours from setting up on the first lake I was now fishing in a hole in the ice enjoying the winter sun.
I tied up two hinge stiff rigs using 20lb bristle filament and size 7 stiff riggers tied on two washed out fluro corkers on test from DT Bait and flicked them some 20 yards to the spots I have been introducing small amounts of bait to over the last month. Each rod had 10 baits over them top, and the kettle was on.
Early afternoon the right hand rod tip wrapped round. After a decent fight in deep water I guided it into the net. As soon as she went in I recognised it as a recapture I had back in October, but an awesome fish none the less. I was Buzzing!
31lb 4oz if stunning winter ice carp.
